CBD Edibles Effects

August 25th, 2021

You have probably heard of or tried CBD, but do you know how the trendy cannabinoid interacts with the human body? Not much research has been done, but here’s what we do know about CBD edibles effects and how CBD makes you feel.

What effect does CBD gummies have on the body?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of approximately 100 other chemical compounds called cannabinoids that are found naturally in cannabis plants. CBD and THC have the highest concentration and are also the most sought after by cannabis enthusiasts. All cannabinoids interact with receptors in our body’s endocannabinoid system, which is an intricate cell-signalling system that was discovered in the 1990s. Even if you don’t use any cannabis products, your endocannabinoid system is hard at work regulating normal bodily functions like sleep, mood, appetite, memory, and fertility.

The two main receptors that are influenced by cannabinoids are the CB1 (central nervous system) that is responsible for motor skills, memory, coordination, thinking, and pain perception; and CB2 (peripheral nervous system) that affects digestion, kidneys, liver, eyes, immune system, cardiovascular system, bones, and skin. While THC is thought to bind to one or both of the endocannabinoid receptors, scientists are still unsure how the CBD gummy you just ate works with the endocannabinoid system and receptors. It’s possible that it interacts with a receptor that hasn’t been discovered yet.

What does CBD make you feel?

Unlike THC and smoking marijuana, CBD edible effects do not include the feeling of being high. Consuming this non-intoxicating compound produces a very subtle effect that not everyone will feel at first. Most people begin to feel a sense of calm and relaxation. While subtle, CBD can make you feel less stressed for an important meeting or ease anxiety before going on a job interview.

What does CBD do to your mood?

While CBD may be a non-psychoactive substance, it is mood-altering. CBD is often used for its antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects, which works by interacting with our body’s serotonin production. Serotonin levels stabilize our mood, affect our level of happiness, and improve feelings of well being. People suffering from anxiety conditions like PTSD, social anxiety disorder, and OCD as well as those with depression may be able to find relief from CBD.

How long does it take to feel the effects of a CBD edible?

The method of consumption determines how quickly you will feel its effects. You’ve probably heard about a friend who accidentally ate too much of a pot brownie and got way too high. This is because the edible and the cannabinoids need to be digested and absorbed, which takes quite some time. While smoking a  CBD pre-roll   will have near immediate effects, eating a CBD edible can take anywhere from 40 minutes to one hour to work. CBD edibles that don’t need to be digested like hard candy, lollipops, or CBD mints get absorbed within the mouth or sublingually and you may feel the effects in just 20 to 30 minutes. While it may take a CBD edible longer to kick in, they will last longer as well. You can expect a CBD edible to last between 6 to 8 hours, however this depends on potency, your metabolism, and other factors.

CBD edibles dosage

The correct CBD edible dosage really depends on each individual person and what issues they are trying to treat. Certain conditions require higher doses or react better with a combination of CBD and THC. If you’re just starting out, try a low dose of 10 mg to 20 mg per day for five days and monitor your symptoms. You can then increase your dosage by 5 mg to 10 mg per day for another five days to see if there is a change. The average dose for most health issues like insomnia, chronic pain, and anxiety, is around 200 mg per day or less. It may be helpful to consult a medical professional about the correct dosage and your treatment, however if you’re trying CBD edibles on your own, never exceed 1,500 mg per day or you may experience negative side effects like extreme drowsiness, nausea, and diarrhea.
