The proper way to hit a bong

Different methods for learning how to hit a water bong are crucial because only some techniques might work for you as well as you think. Everyone has another way to hit a bong correctly, but all it comes down to is preference. The essential shell and directions for adequately hitting a bong are identical. Still, as you become more comfortable with how to hit a bong rig, you will start to notice that you prefer to pack a bowl a certain way, or you prefer to fill up your bong water a specific way, and so on. When it comes to smoking plants, a decent portion of it comes to ritual and routine so that every user can get the perfect hit every time.

How to hit a water bong

First, understanding the anatomy of bongs and water pipes is essential because the more you know about a device, the more you can understand its functions and why. New users might need help understanding the water chamber or why elaborate bongs require specific cleaning methods, and how would new users know if beginners were never shown the way? When you can understand how to hit the bong, maneuvering it will be much easier, especially when you become high AF.

Parts of a bong

Here are the parts of a bong that are broken down into five parts that all serve specific functions in the process of how to hit bong:

Bong Bowl

A bong bowl is where users will pack the plant and where learning how to hit a bong properly begins. Usually bowls typically range from small to large and can be deep or shallow depending on the type of bong you are handling. Many users like to have more giant bowls to pack more plants into, while others prefer smaller bowls to get quick and effective hits.

Bong carb

The bong carb is part of the bong where the bowl inserts. It is the hole that connects the bong bowl to the chamber and initiates the bong process. Carbs are covered when inhaling and then when uncovered they release the smoke into the chamber, cool it off, and then pull towards the mouth to inhale slowly. While a carb might not seem important, it very much is!

Downstem

This part is connected to the bowl and the part that inserts into the carb, not the actual bowl. A downstem is typically submerged into the chamber and looks like a tube, sometimes with slits (known as percolators) that help filter and smooth out a bong rip.

Water Chamber

This is essentially the base of a bong, and where water is held, the hit is filtered and sent on its way for inhaling.

Neck

The neck of a bong, also known as the tube of a bong, is where the smoke travels up and rises to be inhaled.

When you use a bong, every part is significant and essential in how to hit a bong because, without one piece, the other parts cannot function correctly. Smoking from bongs allows you to understand the process of turning plants into something that can be smoked, inhaled, and used to reach higher dimensions in your mind.

Step by step guide: how to hit a bong correctly

Now that you understand the moving parts of a bong, you can learn the proper way how to hit bong rips - even if you have never done it before! Follow this easy guide to get the best experience out of your bongs.

1. Fill the chamber with water .

A bong cannot function without the correct amount of bong water, so the first thing you will want to do is make sure your bong is filled with clean and filtered water. You do not want to overfill your bong with water, or you will get a splashback upon inhaling. After some use with any bong, you will gauge the best amount of water, but when using a new bong, it is ideal for filling the chamber until the downstream hole is submerged, about half an inch from the bottom the bottom of the bong. If you have percolators inside of your bong, you should make sure the percolator holes are submerged with enough water so that they can properly filter the water and smoke.

2. Pack the entire bowl .

Using a grinder will provide the best outcome when it comes to packing the bowl of a bong. While you do want to fill the entire bowl and make sure there is finely enough ground plant material for a bong rip, you do not want to pack it tightly enough that air cannot flow through the bowl. On the contrary, if you loosely fill a bowl with more oversized nugs, it will most likely result in a less than stellar bong hit. Start out with about half a gram and go from there, making sure that your bowl is packed correctly from the bottom and is even and smooth on top. An uneven bowl can be weird to light up, and you will soon find out how bad a bong rip can be when a bowl is not packed adequately.

3. Light up the bong bowl .

Using your non dominant hand, hold the base of the bong so that you can keep the water pipe steady. Cover your mouth over the mouthpiece to trap the air inside the bong, begin inhaling, and use a hemp wick or other lighter source to light the bong bowl with your dominant hand. The point of this step is to fill up the chamber with all the smoke, and while the smoke gathers, you will move on to the next step. This step basically determines how big of a hit you will get out of smoking your water pipe. This can sound like a lot to do at once, but it will become so much more natural as time goes on and you gain more experience with using bongs.

4. Pull out the bong bowl/stem and inhale slowly

Finally, pull out the bong bowl/stem using your free hand while simultaneously inhaling. You will see that smoke rises from the chamber directly up the neck and out through the mouthpiece. The rest is up to you! You can hold it in for a bit to really get the full effects of a bong rip, or you can immediately exhale after inhaling all that you can. You do not have to inhale all of the smoke at once, and as a beginner, we suggest taking smaller bong hits when smoking so that you can get used to the inhale process and how it performs on your lungs.

When learning how to smoke a bong, it can be overwhelming, but once you get the hang of it you can start to do some tricks that you never thought were possible! Try hit stacking, for example, where you stack multiple bong hits and pack the bowl where you can light up as many as you can to fill the chamber up. This is not recommended for a newbie, but an admirable goal to think about working towards! Try learning to hit a bong without coughing first and see how far that will take you.
