There are so many coffee lovers out there and many of them also happen to have a passion for ganja. Coffee and weed is a classic mix of flavors and effects, particularly for those who make waking and baking part of their weekend routine.
Marijuana and caffeine
Are you wondering what happens when you mix coffee and weed? Since each strain has different effects and everyone reacts differently, this is an interesting question to explore, especially when planning for your next wake and bake . In addition to the strain you choose, the method of consumption also makes a difference for many cannabis users. Some people get extra jittery and experience an unpleasant aftertaste when smoking blunts, joints, or bongs with their morning java. If that’s the case for you, swap to a vaporizer, e-rig, or tinctures and see if that makes a difference.
There aren’t many scientific studies done on the effects of THC and caffeine on the human body, however a 2012 study on rats showed that they performed better on memory tests when there was caffeine or THC in their system, but worse after consuming both. One naturopathic and cannabis doctor, Dr. Shawn Meirovici, ND believes that our endocannabinoid system is slowed down with caffeine consumption and that “caffeine is a stimulator of nerve activity…and endocannabinoids are inhibitors of nerve activity. It would seem that coffee/caffeine may decrease this inhibitory activity and therefore may alter the calming [effect] of our endocannabinoid system, making it harder for the body to chill out.”
How to add THC to your brew
Marijuana infused coffee puts a twist on the usual wake and bake and takes the experience to a whole new level. There are a few ways to create an elevated cup of Joe or easy pre-made options to get your morning caffeine and cannabis fill.
CBD or THC oil
Aside from simply purchasing a pre-packaged THC coffee drink or using marijuana coffee pods for your Keurig, the easiest method to make marijuana coffee is to simply top off your brew with a few drops of a tincture. This can be a liquid THC or a full-spectrum CBD oil if you’re three cups deep and don’t want to feel any psychoactive effects. CBD coffee is really popular these days and many coffee shops and cafes use this easy method to craft their drinks on the fly. Start out by adding 10mg of THC
DIY cannasugar or cannamilk
Another way to make cannabis infused coffee is to create some basic ingredients used to make homemade edibles that can also be used in drinks like coffee. Creating the perfect latte or cappuccino, calls for some sort of milk, whether it be almond, coconut, oat, or cow’s milk and sugar. Luckily, these are two easy products to infuse and both can be used in other edible recipes if you decide to make a large batch. Creating large batches is recommended since it does take some time and effort to do.
Brew your bud and beans
This may seem like the most obvious, but you can absolutely brew your bud with your coffee, however you will need to add some sort of fat. The process is simple, though it will take roughly 40 minutes to boil. Use half a gram of ground dry herb for every three cups of water. Start by bringing the water to a boil on the stove with a scoop of butter or coconut oil (this is key for proper absorption). Add the ground flower and continue boiling for roughly 40 minutes with occasional stirring. Strain the water and prepare your coffee like normal. Pour over, French press, or moka pot coffee makers are best.
Pre-packaged drinks or coffee pods
With a growing interest in weed coffee, there are now a variety of brands that produce already made products so you can simply wake up and have a drink. These cannabis drinks can be found at most dispensaries, so be sure to try a few the next time you head out to stock up on bud. Some popular marijuana drink brands include Somatik, Drink IT, and Therapy Tonics. These coffees typically range from 10mg of THC up to roughly 80 or 90mg and also come in a 1:1 ratio of THC to CBD or purely CBD options. If you already have a coffee machine that uses pods, there are also some THC-infused coffee pods on the market to make waking and baking a breeze.
Cannabis strains that pair with coffee
Just like a sommelier may pair a bold Malbec with a ribeye steak, cannabis and coffee enthusiasts alike are intrigued by the art of coffee and cannabis pairing. A good pairing can mean subtle notes of caramel or chocolate that are known to blend well with coffee or a specific strain t hat already has a tasty coffee undertone. These are a few strains to enhance your weekend wake and bake.
